The History Behind North River Landing

Petaluma’s history is intertwined with the area we call today… north river landing. Dating back to the mid 1800’s the North River Landing area was brushed by the Petaluma River as commercial barges made their way to nearby feed lots.

From 1865 to 1957 this land was used primarily for industrial and agricultural uses. The property housed a feed lot with barns warehousing agricultural goods.

By 1957 the Petaluma River was no longer the primary method of transporting agricultural goods and the property was adapted to better provide for the community’s needs.

It was around this time Mel Silva took over the former feed storage building and converted it into an appliance store. The advent of Silva’s Appliance Store meant a positive change for the once agricultural location.

In 2003 the property was rezoned as a part of the Central Petaluma Specific Plan. Once again the community needs change. But change doesn’t come easy and this became evident as the general planning for the North River Landing project began to take form in 2006.
